About Darknet Review
Our methodology, team structure, independence policy, and responsible disclosure framework.
Who We Are
Darknet Review is an independent editorial publication focused on security research and operational analysis of darknet market infrastructure. Our team includes security researchers, forensic analysts, and investigative journalists with backgrounds in cryptography, network security, and digital privacy.
We operate independently of any market, vendor, or commercial interest in the darknet ecosystem. Our funding comes exclusively from direct reader support. We do not accept advertising, placement fees, or affiliate commissions from any entity we cover.
Review Methodology
Every platform we review undergoes a structured assessment process that we have developed and refined over three years of publication. The methodology is applied consistently across all platforms regardless of the platform's reputation, size, or relationship to our previous coverage.
Assessment Process
- 90-day uptime monitoring. We deploy automated uptime probes via Tor circuits, sampling each platform every 15 minutes. This generates a statistically meaningful uptime dataset independent of platform-reported figures.
- Direct account testing. We create funded accounts and conduct test purchases across a minimum of three product categories. All test accounts use newly generated identities with no connection to our team's other activities.
- Security configuration audit. We assess 14 security criteria covering authentication mechanisms, escrow model, communication encryption, DDoS resistance, and canary publication consistency.
- Support quality testing. We initiate support tickets and dispute cases with our test accounts and measure response times and outcome quality.
- Community cross-reference. We cross-reference our direct findings with community reports, forum discussions, and historical incident data to identify patterns not visible in our monitoring window.
Scoring Rubric
Our 14 criteria are grouped into four domains: Security (weighted 1.5x), Product Range, User Experience, and Support. Each criterion is scored on a 1–5 scale. Domain scores are arithmetic means of their constituent criteria. The overall score is a weighted average of domain scores with Security receiving the 1.5x weighting.
We recalibrate the rubric annually to reflect changes in the technological and operational landscape. Previous years' scores are not retroactively adjusted but are annotated where rubric changes would affect comparative interpretation.
Independence Policy
Our editorial decisions are made exclusively by our editorial team without input from or approval by any market operator, vendor, or commercial partner. We maintain a strict separation between any commercial activities (reader support) and editorial content.
We do not provide advance notice of review publication to platforms under review. We do not share draft review content for comment or correction prior to publication, though we will correct factual errors after publication when presented with verifiable evidence.
We do not accept "right of reply" insertions into our published reviews. Platforms that disagree with our assessments are welcome to publish their own response through their own channels — we will link to credible responses as contextual footnotes if they contain verifiable factual claims.
Responsible Disclosure
During the course of our security assessments, we occasionally identify security vulnerabilities in the platforms we review. Our responsible disclosure policy applies to significant vulnerabilities (those that could result in user harm if exploited):
- We notify the platform operator via encrypted message through their official communication channel, providing technical details of the vulnerability.
- We allow a 90-day remediation window before public disclosure in our review.
- If the vulnerability is actively exploited before the remediation window closes, we accelerate disclosure to protect the user community.
- We do not exploit vulnerabilities we discover, regardless of the value of any exploitable assets.
